If your service mix is mostly enhancement maintenance and shaping rather than heavy bulk removal, a ceramic bit is usually the everyday choice.

    Diamond bits

    Diamond bits are the detail tool: filing and shaping the nail and cuticle area, and prepping the nail plate before product application. On the pedicure side, diamond ball bits clean under the toenail and smooth dry, built-up skin.     Carbide bits

    How to replace a head

    1. Power off the machine and let the handpiece come to a complete stop before touching the chuck.
    2. Open the chuck — on a locking-chuck handpiece, this is usually a collar you twist or a button you press, depending on your model.
    3. Remove the old bit, noting which direction it seated so the new one goes in the same way.
    4. Insert the new bit fully into the chuck. It should sit flush, not partway in.
    5. Close the chuck until it's snug. It should hold the bit firmly with no play when you tug gently.
    6. Power on at a low speed first and check for wobble, noise, or off-center spin before running it at working speed.

    Clean and inspect before every swap

    Wipe down the handpiece and chuck before inserting a new head — dust buildup in the chuck is a common cause of a bit that won't seat all the way. Inspect the bit itself for chips, flat spots, or bent shanks; any of those is a sign it's done, not a sign to force it in.

    Troubleshooting

    Bit doesn't fit or seats loosely. Confirm it's a 3/32″ shank bit meant for a standard handpiece, and confirm the chuck is fully closed. If you're on a vacuum-suction machine, confirm the bit is rated for it — standard carbide bits are not.

    Wear seems fast. Grit wears faster on harder or thicker product, and a bit run at too low a speed for the material can wear unevenly rather than cutting cleanly. Match speed to material rather than running everything at one setting.

    Noise or vibration. Usually a bit that isn't seated all the way, a bent shank, or a chuck that needs cleaning — work through those three before assuming the handpiece itself is the problem.
